Jum'ah Journal

"Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet,
Women and sons,
Heaped up hoards of gold and silver
 Horses branded (for blood &excellence)
And (wealth of) Cattle and
Well-tilled land.
Such are the possessions of this world's life But in the nearness to God is the best of the goals (to return to)"
                                                                    (Sura Al-e Imran verse 14.)
Well in today's world make some equivalent changes for understanding--For gold and silver -- Bank balances
For Horses---Expensive autos and personal planes
for cattle and land---Big mansions in specific cities and countries
for women and sons, just delete sons and write WOMEN in capital letters.
I wrote women in the end but the real sequence as the Creator himself has remarked, it is to be given the top place. When big aristocrats and bankers with lot of money and possessions and people with POWER, (Both with and without the enormous musculature) the only thing left is women women and women. Man's history is full of that. Would anybody turn to the advice and admonition of God?

Jum'ah Ournal- Qiyamat Aa gayi?

I know I am late but I was wondering whether we shall see this day to the end.
I did not see the whole movie but only a part of it. Jack Benny (The man who remained 39 for 40 years)
"There is a 'chief' (consider God) who is reported by his assistants that one of the planets has gone rotten so the chief decides to destroy it. He is told it is called earth. He is recommended a 'angel' who is a known gentleman with music interests especially such instruments that require blowing. So the chief gives him instructions how to blow it but when he blows it it sounds musical and not the destroying sound that it  is supposed to emit. Chief tells him (Jack Benny) it will only do that sound if you blow it
at exactly 12 midnight on a particular day.
So he takes his instrument and just before the midnight time on that day he goes on top of the building to blow it and finds a woman sitting there and crying her eyes out.
What is the matter, He asks
My beloved does not want to marry me.
Dont worry, stop crying and in a couple of minutes you wont need that. She ignores his advice but  then his further advice gives her a tip
She wants to jump from the building
he went over to help her and got in trouble
 To cut the story short.
Well you can tell what happened.
He joined a group of many other "failed angels"
And so the earth goes on.....
They do not make such hilarious movies any more

Sunday Surkhi-The late Mr. Holbrooke

Kristof's article appeared in NY times that Mr. Holbrooke knew Afghanistan will be like Vietnam and suggested to clearly sit down on the table for solving the problems in the area and included Pak-India Kashmir problem also.
I saw more than 50 "comments" and the most remarkable thing I saw was Indians writing about how wrong Holbrooke and Kristoff are about Pakistan. The writers showed a complete lack of  ethical sense and were showing'anger' at suggestions for treating Pakistan as a soverign country. One of them went as far as suggesting that let the Afghan and Pashtoons take areas on Pakistan side of Durand line and break up Pakistan into Sind Panjab Belochistan (Finish Pakistan completely) and Azad Kashmir be given back to India because India is a multicultural secular country (no mention of Hinduvta) and the Kashmir  become whole as a part of India.
 Wow.
In contrast to these Hindu sounding names I read three Muslim sounding names also commenting but none of them made such outrageous remarks and in fact no mention of Indopak differences about Kashmir.
And then they say we Muslims/Pakistanis are religious zealots and fundamentalists and what not. Such anti Muslim 'rants' still exist in India, the real reason for Muslims to have a separate land.

Obama got Osama

   Or did he?
It remains the question. Why was his body immediately thrown into the sea?
Why are we not seeing any pictures of that dead body about which the man who shot him should be hailed as the hero.
As everybody says that these questions will remain un-answered.  I believe that the man died long time ago. I remember he was said to have been admitted in a Dubai hospital on 6th September 2001, for renal dialysis. How could he live in caves? Well knowing he had so much money he could have renal dialysis equipment with him after all he did have a physician with him all the time dubbed as his assistant.
What ever the truth I am happy that the myth has ended and reasons to wrap-up the war against terror have a beginning. Also US economy being in shambles it seems prudent to bring this all to a stop before we end up, if we already are not there, like USSR.
Now you may ask why not try find the truth?
To tell you the truth I gave up on this pursuit long time ago. I never believe the media and the news they tell us which is mostly to entertain us rather than inform us. So, I feel 'entertained' by the news of Osama, may Allah forgive his sins and now we can say that officially, there will be so many opinions written about this now for the next few years to come.
Then why are the Americans considering Pakistanis did not help them but helped Osama!
If the Pakistanis did not track what American elite force were able to accomplish--a surgical operation--- neat and so to say without Pakistanis knowing anything just next door to their major army training camp, (A'int they dumb and totally incapable?) then there should be no surprise that they did not know about Osama he was living there. It would be actually surprising if they did know it,

Jum'ah journal-The Art of Compassion for sale

Somewhere in the late nineties the 'administrators' who had taken over the handling of 'healthcare' as a commodity felt that from business point of view this is not going right as the doctors do not know how to do it. Then they started introducing such terminology that was suitable for Ford Motor company because health care required "production line" philosophy and since doctors  make a lot of money and are not delivering enough healthcare, let us do it and employ doctors as our subordinates (serves them right).
Has the cost of healthcare improved?
Can you measure compassion or care in terms of silver/gold?
Not that all physicians are 'saints' and do not 'sell' their product (healthcare) at higher and higher prices and but that is usually devoid of care and compassion, in my opinion and see this article.

Jum'ah Journal--how to say it

You are very familiar with the language and the words you chose for your expression but there is catch here. If you say about something you totally agree with:
 "You can say that again"
It is clearly understood but if you say these words when you are speaking , say for example, Urdu, you will end up saying
"aap dobarah keh saktay hain". It would not convey the same thing to the Urdu-speaking person, in fact it will produce confusion.
It is just that this example turned up when I am writing, no particular meaning but what I am trying to say is becoming clear.  Speaking clear means this, words are clear what you are trying to say is clearly expressed and not confusing or not contrary to th message etc. etc.  There is a verse in the Noble Qur'an
" O ye who believe, fear Allah and say the word directed to the right...." (S. 33, Verse #70
Well actually what it means is that words should be clear and good and correct and well-meaning

Sunday Surkhi--Farrakhan and Qadzafi

Of course one would not expect Farrakhan to speak against the interests of Col. Moammar Qazdafi for he has may be 'three million reasons' to speak in his favor, speaking from Maryam Mosque. Well They may have many things in common including rapidly declining popularity in the world (of media and men). Farrakhan's speeches and sometimes his somewhat daring topics or adventurous undertakings (Million man march) add to his charismatic personality which seems to be the reason behind making a proper and fitting 'khalifa' of Alijah Muhammad to head the NOI movement in USA.
However for the inquisitive mind and for the balance of opinion making I wish ti inform the readers some good things attributable to Qazdafi in Libya (derived from blog of I.A.Bhopal)
 1. Free-education up to 8th grade.
2. Free supply of milk for every newborn in Libya up to two years
3. Free hospitalization for every Libyan including medicines.
There may be more. Average per person yearly income in Libya is quoted at $12000.00
This information and the figures invite soul-searching but at the same time you see Qazdafi as a powerful man bombing his own people, killing innocents as well as the 'rebels',to maintain his grip. Would he maintain his 'popularity' to the same extent if given continued chance of "governing'?

Qur'an burning and its reaction

 What media has missed.
Muslims will NOT burn Bibles
Muslims will NOT make cartoon of Jesus (PBUH)
I wish I could also say the same about Churches
BECAUSE (these actions are UNISLAMIC and) Islam prohibits such activity AND IN ADDITION :
The Muslims are the only ones who respect and have reverence for Jesus PBUH (perhaps even more than Christians)---No Muslim country dare make movies of Jesus or Moses or Muhammad, out of respect.
The Muslims are the only ones who respect and have reverence for Bible, almost like Christians ( and can take an oath on Bible almost like they would on Qur'an).
This is not just because Islam teaches respect for other religions but ALSO because Islamic beliefs about Jesus Christ and the Christian Scriptures (and of course Jewish Scriptures)

Sunday Surkhi--Torture Tactics

It seems that once a behavior is observed and ignored or passed without comments/correction it is considered OK to continue it. Human weakness is such that even if conscience bothers it is ignored because it is perceived there is no "supervisor".
That the physicians in Israel have been ignoring lot of physical and mental torture of the prisoners from Gaza and such places, is now well-documented and being pursued by other physicans concerned about this unethical practice. Such physicians are considered accomplices in torture whether they realize it or not.
Now, we are getting info about the American physicians behaving the same way toward their prisoners and this is a very disturbing news, (BMJ of March) although since the times of "Abu Ghuraib" photos there has been attempts to improve the situation but once this kind of behavior sets in it is passed as normal and unfortunately it is going to remain with the "conquerer" (Remember Changez Khan)
So, which country in the West should be considered civilized?

Pakistan Day

Happy? Pakistan Day to all my Pakistan-loving readers.
 Why a question Mark.
Well! to tell you the truth I do not know whether to be happy or not. To refresh the memories, It was on 23rd of March 1940 when "Pakistan Resolution" was passed in Lahore in the "Minto Park", later to be called
Iqbal Park, where now the Minar-e-Pakistan Stands, in the
(I was in Lahore from 1948 to 1959, it was still called Minto Park then)
all India Muslim League Conference. Mr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, (Originally,A Barrister from Bombay) the chairman of the Muslim League and of the conference presenred the resolution read out by Maulavi A.K. Fazalul-Haqq.(then CM of Bangaal). That made the history.
Today we stand at a situation wherein "K" (for Kashmir) is till missing and in the left over "Pastan" nobody is able to hold on to this 'ancient' (the meaning of pastan in Urdu) country. The political and financial and from every point of view it is not much of a country. Just compare the statistics of how much deterioration in everything including the moral and morals of people of Pakistan between 1947 and 2011.
Is the country has already become a "Pastan" an ancient history?
So, what should I say about the greeting of happiness, my friends?

Sunday Surkhi

I missed because of being busy again actually wrote in Urdu but that also got the date of 12th not 13th.
Anyway, everybody has commented on King's doings (Peter King and the hearings about Radicalization of Muslims in USA) according to his will/wish just like a real king, may be the name might have something to do with it, for he cared for nobody's negative comments and what more he expects that he will be given a pat on his back (if not he will give it to himself by himself)
Remarkable how he quoted only one "study" of 2004 (was it a study??? or just a random opinion) of Kabbani who I think has a serious problem with reality and I would not be surprised if he does have a thought process disorder. And how King made a degrading remark about CARE. This is the first time I have heard a negative about this remarkable organization Is this all just a rhetoric?
Is this just a show of Islamophobia  or the continued stand of republicans against the Muslims of America?
"Go home", they say. I was given the authority and priviledge to make a home in America and I did and made a pledge to support the constitution of USA. How can we tell these people that when A Muslim who follows the fundamentals of Islam and teachings of his holy book always keeps his pledge, guards it
"O ye who believe, fulfill all your obligations" or
"O you who have attained to faith! Be true to your covenants"
 (Qur'an, chapter IV, verse 1)

Jum'ah Journal-Late

 Have been busy
What is radicalization of a Muslim?
How can any Muslim be called a "fundamentalist" because every Muslim is required to follow the five fundamentals of lslam and therefore he cannot be a true Muslim if he is not "fundamentalist" in that sense.

Sunday Surkhi - iPatient

 Interesting title, is'nt it?
I borrowed this word (from a professor) as I was wondering myself to invent such a term. This prof. of Medicine actually lamenting about the gradual decline in PE (Physical Examination) skills of today's physicians. Makes a very illuminating 'discovery' of these aspects of medical practice and introduces the use of the now famous (champion)
'WATSON', (that he will be common in the hospitals)
how, "he" established his iSuperiority over the established champions of "Jeopardy" on TV
I had expressed such anxieties myself speaking about CT scan use in a scientific meeting (of IMANA in Missouri) in 1984 that the student's (and intern's) understanding of mental exercise and clinical examinations for diagnosis of strokes and their differential diagnosis is going to start declining.
I remember when I was confronted by the first article in 1964-5, "Computers in Medicine", I laughed with a sneer on my face
ha! now , how can a computer take the place of the physician diagnosing a disease or prescribing?

Well, we are almost there already, and yes, as the professor says'
"..What worries me even more that this ease of ordering a scan has caused doctors's most basic skills in examining the body to atrophy."
I did not require me to be a genius to say the same thing 28 years ago, it has been apparent to every clinician all along. I am already observing the same and the "toxic effects" of lab and technology supporting machines of doctors. This is the major difference of a Pakistani-Indian young graduate and the American young graduate who is unquestionably a superior 'technocrat'.

For we see now that the results of all the tests etc.    "and the engine for all of that, indeed the place where dialogue between doctors and nurses takes place is the computer."
I clearly remember, while at work they declared
"From January 1st, 2000, all records will be on computers and no hand written notes are allowed"
My friend said, "I am going to have a heart attack".
And after that what he observed, just like I did too, is that
"You know we now face the computers and keep talking with our backs to the patient (in the out patient).
The human touch is becoming less and less, with the advancing technology
Some day I see not in too distant future, there will be a call to return to the basics.
"Return to Sender!"

Jum'ah Journal--Truth wins in the end

I guess you all are witnessing a real wave of awakening among the Muslims that seems overdue anyway.  As I said before the Egyptian happening may be the beginning and it seems that way more now. But see the lives being lost for the truth as always the obstacles and difficulties always face the truth seeking people as they work together. That is the gist of message in that famous short sura about which a person of no less authority than Abdullah Bin Abbas said that if that was the only revealed Qur'an it would be sufficient for us (for guidance). I am talking about sura 'wal-'Assr' : "By (the token of) Time (through the ages), Verily Man is in loss, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds and (join together) in the mutual teaching of truth and of patience and constancy"
As you go out for teaching truth you need patience for you sure are going to be met with resistance and opposition and obstacles etc.

Monday the 14th February

I an not doing the usual type of Valentine today.
This is a sad love I am writing. I met during this visit to Pakistan my nephew Dr. Israr Ahmad Butt along with his wife and his older sister in Narowal (Pb)
This was a brief meeting for he was on call and I had not seen him for may be 25 years or so.
I did not have much time but he took me to the hospital (private) where he showed me his ward, a well-equipped children's and neonatal unit he was indeed a devoted pediatrition but in difficult circumstances of his life, having moved with his family from Quetta to Panjab, recently.
Alas this turned out to be my last meeting with him I just got the news from Pakistan that he died of a sudden heart attack. No history. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi Rajeoon

Sunday Surkhi--Shirley

  This was a 'heavy' Sunday
When I was making my first home in NC after arriving here in 1973, it was in Fayetteville NC
After I bought a small house I needed all things like sofa dining set chairs beddings etc. etc. everything and Shirley went round with me enjoying every minute of the shopping and I trusted her choices. I was obliged to her for her help but she thanked me that I gave her the opportunity to 'enjoy'. That is Shirley.
Rene Shirley Nathaniel  dear wife of my friend Dennis. We attended her funeral today all the family members and friends, many of whom I was meeting after so many years. That was a typical Indian Christian ceremony. Of course, as a Muslim, I chose not to attend the religious ceremony but that was a sad and touching day for us. Seeing friends with whom we spent so much of happy time together at Shirley and Dennis's place, enjoying their hospitality, music, and food. Tea, she was one great connoisseur I have met in my life who knew about the qualities and flavours of this drink.
She enjoyed life fully. Once there was cooking (International cuisine) competition at Fort Bragg (she used to teach Urdu/Hindi to the gee-eyes) and of course her cooking got the first prize. Surprised? No I was not. I said that I would have been really surprised if Shirley had NOT gotten the first prize. That tells a lot about her perfectionistic personality. (Yes she was my patient also for her migraine.)
That was Shirley, my very brief note about this woman of great rakh rakahao (رکھ رکھائو)

Sunday Surkhi--iPS Cells

To start with this is not 'new news' but the recognition of the Japanese scientist is certainly new
Dr. Shimya Yamanaka got the top award of 400,000 Euros from Spain for his contribution to the science/technology in the form of the development of
 Induced Pluripotent Stemcells
from the patient's own body thus eliminating the ethical objections of getting stem cells from human embryos etc.
That is a great advantage and we await the suitability of such cells as they are used in clinical practice.

Jum'ah Journal--Democracy vs Justice

Democracy is considered as a form of Government in which supreme power is held by the people and exercised either directly or through elected representatives. (Government OF the people BY the people FOR the people)
It is said that Plato and Aristotle distrusted pure democracy fearing that majority rule would lead to 'mob rule'.(Have we not seen that?) As for 'human rights' and human dignity humanism renaissance enlightenment etc. are all very pretty sounding words considered to be part of democracy but there is a lot variation in interpretation of these words in different peoples of the world and we see that champions of democracy use autocracy when it suits the political purpose and all human dignity and humanism goes down the drain. Majority rule sounds good but if Hamas gets majority the democracy is thrown out of the window and majority is condemned by the same champions of democracy that propose elections and support fair elections.
I have said nothing about 'autocrats' for they are not counted even though Mubarak was 'elected' by 99% majority and yet he ruled as autocrat and Zardari was elected in Pakistan by "democratic majority" and is doing no different from Mubarak.
In the heat of arguments Islamic teachings are thrown out as they are considered "theocracy' (Sharia law is however NOT theocracy). The emphasis in Sharia is on Justice and balance in governance. Justice is what is needed for balancing in power of the Governer and the governed. The law must see to it that there is no oppression at all levels, governmental, organizational and even individual. Call it whatever you like but if that is not provided in democracy, the human being remains at the mercy of other human being/s

There is plenty of Gas, plenty of Electricity, and plenty of Water in Pakistan but "load-shedding" is ridiculously widespread for all these simple daily life essentials, utilities, because of the "distributing authorities' are making sure they get their share of money/power.
I must hurry to take my bath before water supply is suspended, and must make sure to do it such time when gas was available and water was heated and then also see that you can shave while electricity is available. In many towns women folk get up at 4am to cook all the dishes for the day because there is no gas during the day it is only available during nightly hours.
Coming back to USA was so much relief and while bad weather caused one minute suspension of electricity, I almost had a heart attack--- Not Load-Shedding here for God sake.

Sunday Surkhi- Egyptian Example

My wife always said Hosni Mubarak looka like a Firaun, but even without Moses he is being thrown out now.
Remarkably these days such autocratic 'Firauns' flourish so well.
People have demonstarted in Egypt that enough is enough
Would other countries especially the Muslim countries take a lesson? That is a wide open question.
Whatever the implications be with Israel-Egypt relationship and American-Egyptian relationship, would that be a wishful thinking on my part if I said that
American people also take to streets saying enough is enough. Israel is our ally but the cost is so  exorbitant and so consuming for us. We are paying in heavy dollars not only to Israel but also to others to keep their mouths shut against Israel and then we are paying in life of our soldiers all over the world.
In the end we do not have credibility or credit and we command no respect anywhere in the world even though so many people would look up to us for everything. Should we not take to streets some day?

Blesphamy Laws of Pakistan

"Several sections of Pakistan's Criminal Code comprise its blasphemy laws.[3] § 295 forbids damaging or defiling a place of worship or a sacred object. § 295-A forbids outraging religious feelings. § 295-B forbids defiling the Quran. § 295-C forbids defaming the prophet Muhammad. Except for § 295-C, the provisions of § 295 require that an offence be a consequence of the accused's intent. Defiling the Quran merits imprisonment for life. Defaming Muhammad merits death with or without a fine. (See below Sharia.) If a charge is laid under § 295-C, the trial must take place in a Court of Session with a Muslim judge presiding.[4]"

The above I have a quote from the internet available statement out of this law

The law is present, was passed during the time of Zia and has been used much more often against the persons who dared say something against the prophet in Pakistan. (Why could the lawmakers at that time NOT see the consequences that are now so visible all over the world? Human rights existed then also etc. etc.) Once the law has been passed, however it should be respected and carries out according to its meanings. Previous to 1986 there were only two or three cases but after 1986 many cases ( I do not remember exactly how many) have been reported and the problems are that
1. Muslims use it against the non-Muslims when there is no remark made against the prophet PBUH  and
2. No lawyer wants to defend such cases for fear of death and
3. Muslims take up mob mentality and 'lynching' tactics with the police or 'Law' taking no notice of such activity.
That is what resulted in Taseer's death and although Mumtaz qadri is accused but the lecture or the lecturer who infused such act into the man is not accounted for. I still remember the many houses of Christians were burnt in some village in Pakistan for alleged Qur'an majeed desecration which turned to be untrue, but AFTER the death of many persons and fire destruction of many houses.
I cannot imagine anybody Muslim or nonMuslim saying anything against the prophet or Qur'an in Pakistan knowing that with or without the law of blesphamy he is doomed to die.
The inactivity of the government against Taseer when he said the law was "black Law" led to his death
Taseer should not have used such words against this law. Firstly no law of the country should be called "black' by an official- He was a Governer of the most important Province. Should that be taken as offence against the prophet? I am not sure at all but that is the way it happened. Moreover when a decision by your court has been made on such an important issue the governer should accept it and respect the decision even if it is not right in his thinking. Some say what he meant was that it is misused for grudge against the nonMuslim or Muslim person but that does not sound appropriate to me (I have a statement of an Urdu writer to that effect- whereas he is only a pro-PPP writer and Taseer was a satunch PPP man)
There is no doubt however that what Mumtaz did was also wrong and the law should take rpoper action against him no matter how the fanatic Muslims take it
But I doubt if such action would be taken. The govt. is weak, timid, and corrupt. Nobody has clean slate of character and therefore courage to defend the law. Law is not respected by lawmakers
چو کفر از کعبہ برخیزد کجا ماند مسلمانی

Sunday Surkhi- Taseer and me

Salman Taseer ,Governer of Panjab, (s/o Dr. M.D. Taseer   - Moahammad Din) addressing the gathering as chief guest of APPNA Dinner program on 28th Dec. 2010, in Lahore.
It was in 1948 when I joined Islamia College, Lahore (Railway Road). I faced the Principal of the college in my interview none other than Dr. M. D. Taseer who smilingly gave his permission for admission.  Then after F.Sc. I had joined Government College Lahore. I was returning from Anarkali to my hostel when I saw Dr.  Taseer walking in search of  a Tonga. (He did not drive a car, I remember he came to College in Tonga). That must be the last day of November because I read news about his death the following day in the paper. he had had a heart attack.
I took the above picture of his son knowing little that a week later he would be dead too, gunned down by an assasin, Mumtaz Qadri. (Coincidental? yes and no, but wait listen further.)
I had landed in Islamabad/Rawalpindi on 26th Dec. 2007 and the following day an assasin killed Benazir Bhutto.
I was visiting a friend that evening on 4th Jan 2011 just a few blocks away from the place where Salman Taseer was killed and I then apologized to my friend who I was supposed to visit that evening and stayed home with my friend as I felt unsafe going out that evening after Salman's death.
1948 myclass was full of misbehaving boys and therefore one day the Principal himself came to teach us.  All I still remember him walking in my classroom back and forth obviously enjoying the explanation, the meanings of the verses of the famous poem
"A red red rose" (by Robert Burns, pyblished first in 1794)
"O my love's like a red red rose
   Thats newly sprung in June
O my love's like the melodie
   Thats sweetly played in tune"
Not a single sound other than Dr. Taseer's was heard in the class while he was teaching as if all of us were stunned by the teacher's charisma and speech. He was reportedly the first Indian who received Ph.D. in English (Cambridge University). He was a poet himself and a litereary person who would create smiles and laughters in any gathering with his witty remarks and jovial nature. (I had mentioned about that in some other blog of mine before.)

Jum'ah Journal

Back home after travel. Tired and exhausted
Would write more clearly by next Friday
My aim is to find the real "295" in Pakistan- namoos risalat law that you have all heard about. I was just a few blocks away from that place where Salman Taseer was gunned down in Islamabad on 4th Jan.
He was not my fav. either but he should not have been killed. My interest was his father Dr. M D Taseer who taught me in 1948-9, Will tell you more about it later.

Jum'ah Journal--Guru Nanak and Granth Saheb

It is a pity I know so little of Guru Nanak although I have had good Sikkh friends.
The special treatment the Sikkhs give to their "holy book" calling it Granth Saheb is remarkable. The book is given almost human treatment and respect such as the old fashioned 'Morechhal" to "cool down or make flies go away
I know panjabi but Gurmukhi I cannot read (my son can try some, he had Sikkh friends in college.)
They are known to believe in one God but beyond that my knowledge is limited.

Sunday Surkhi-Blasphemy law

Let us see now what happened
In Pakistan a quarrel broke out in the fields between some women, one of them was a Christian. There were unparliamentary lanhuage used  and the Muslim women decided to report against the Christian that she talked ill about the prophet of Islam which the Christian woman denies (Swearing on the Bible)
Case goes to court and the judge passes the sentence- Death for the blasphemous utterance. How the investigation ran or shortcircuited etc. remains to be un-earthed because the investigation was improper, legally that is--(performed by a less than SP of Police). The woman in question has appealed mercy to the president of Pakistan Asif Ali zardari (through the Panjab Governer- Salman Taseer)
Even if Zardari annuls the death sentence the very "religious Muslims" will not stay calm.
The woman's life will remain in danger.
Is this what Islam teaches us?
I heard they are considering some change in this law. That is a welcome news

Eid-al-Adh-ha, the sacrifice day

This day all the Muslim world celebrates along with the hajjis performing sacrifice of animal, the commemoration of the great sacrifice Ibraheem AS made by sacrificing his own son
Hajjis left Muzdalifa after collecting pebbles and made sacrifice, came out of Ihraam and returned to Makka to perform Tawaf Ziarat.
Lot of things to do for them but happy. Hajj is almost complete. They return to Mina before sunset and visit Makkah on 11th and 12th and if willing to stay for 13th day they would visit daily. Then will return to Makkah for plans to to do whatever they want, for they have completed hajj---Hajj Mabroor
This is a remarkable journey indeed, both physically as well as spiritually

Jum'ah Journal--Da'wah principles

The main principle for inviting people to Allah is laid down in Qur'an itself
"Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preachng and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious......." S XVI, Verse 125
Of course such speach or 'preach' is not common to all and I feel only those who have that ability should engage in "da'wa" work. However, this is not to discourage those who are doing this duty. May Allah bless them
I wish to quote here which was sent to me by a friend and it is worth sharing.
The quote is extracted from the speech of Lord Sacks (chief Rabbi of London) who was welcoming the (recent) Pope. He said

"We celebrate both our commonalities and differences because if we had nothing in common we could not communicate and if we had everything in common we would have nothing to say....."

Very good, we need to enlarge it to encompass all three Abrahamic faiths

Sunday Surkhi--US politics and Muslims

There have been various comments about the losses that democrats suffered in this mid-term election. That was expected. Muslims have not yet become sufficiently active to enforce a 'position' within the political grounds of US. It is definitely going to take time and a lot of efforts of the educated group of Muslims in US to carve out a plan and increase their"presence" here. I understand there is Christian right group being affected by anti-Islam propaganda but that should not deter us from active participation. Nay, in fact it should excite us to greater participation.
We need to ignore these anti-Muslim and anti-Islam efforts and carry out our own programd with much more zeal and enthusiasm. That is the need of the day.

Sunday Surkhi--No Tricks today

Trick or Treat business is more a cultural side of the mythical or almost mythical religious background of Halloween
Again we find that the background for celebration is 'pagan'.
If you respect your religion why associate it with pagan and why is it so difficult to divorce it from the pagan thoughts or practices?
Human weakness is so indelibly written on the Man's face:
"Man was created weak" Says Qur'an (Chapter 4th, Verse 28.)
This weakness is physical as well as emotional and spiritual all combined. Always looking for easy things for 'fun' even in worship which is inherently a serious business for you are talking to your Creator, the Creator of all and everything the whole Universe and more.

Jum'ah Journal--Pictures of the prophet SAWS

I am sure you have come across this "chain-letter" on FB or other places on the IN and sometimes you want to support but not always.
As for the pictures of the prophet, I am not sure what would be the purpose. the pictures were first seen (I dont know how old) or paintings or drawings of some kind in Iranian writings, showing the prophet on the Burraq. I do not know who drew those and why and of course Ulama must have objected but that remains a fact and I have personally seen them.
It is 'prohibited' to draw him or dramatize his life or person of him etc. and that was his own teaching during life (for obvious reasons) and we as Muslims who love the prophet SAWS must respect his wishes. Inspite of that a movie was made (I enjoyed it) about the 'messenger' in which the 'prophet' did not appear on the screen. However our friend Mustafa Akkad (May his soul rest in peace) was allowed to produce it, by Al-Azhar.
If the drawing is not for mockery and is done by non-Muslim he/she is not prohibited as we Muslims are. It is not 'offensive' to us but is considered 'disrespectful' at most.
My own thinking has been that we as Muslims should have made objections for all the movies made in Hollywood about Jesus Christ PBUH or Moses PBUH. The Christians did not object even though they consider him son of God or even God because they did not consider such an act as disrespectful to the person. I have enjoyed some of them, I must say even though I think it is 'disrespectful' to picturize such exalted personalities.

Seventy Year old and pregnant?

That is what attracted me to see the program on TV
Incidentally the old woman and the doctors were in India doing this business of
providing "healthy elderly women" with IVF and making pregnancy from ova (did not hear the whole story so I do not know where was it obtained from) and a "donated Sperm" from unknown sources.
Frankly I could not see enough reason why an elderly couple wanted to have a child of "their Own" But they sold two buffaloes and borrowed money from the bank etc. and got the pregnancy and a beautiful child. The commentators insisting that older mothers are better, less nervous more loving and more tolerant etc. etc.
The Qur'an recognizes the mother "who gives birth" to the baby.
How would you consider that if it is not your sperm and your wife gives birth to a baby?

Sunday Surkhi--Animal Kingdom

1950-52, I was a student of Biology in University of the Panjab (Governmnt College, which is now upgraded to the University level.
My favorite was Zoology so much that I had gone through the whole Zoology Museum of the University (Just a couple of small rooms with all 'specimens'.
I was fascinated with names and animals of all kinds. I have since visited many museums here for kids and have enjoyed with my kids and now am still doing with G-kids. I almost joined the Zoology department as teacher but fascination with human medicine got better of me
Upgraded Durham museum is the first one I am seeing with well-organized 'insectarium' which I did not see before anywhere. insects give me creepy crawly feelings because I have been bitten/stung by some but this a vast class indeed
I learnt that Spiders eat insects but are not insects-amazing (Maybe I have forgotten my lessons). Both belong to Phylum Arthropoda but spiders are Class Arachnida class and insects-of course Class Insecta.
Still learning

Jum'ah Journal--Lost art of physicians

There has been a major coverage of miners and of course each of the 33 ones will have a minor to major story--the one conflict of a GF (who was embraced by the miner on emerging from the capsule) and wife has laready started and so the life goes on
Along with such news one news caught my attension
Physician revives the dying art"
So I was curious. It turned out to be just PE (physical Examination)
Yes indeed I stand witness to this dying Art which our physician pictured in the 'news' clearly shows as he was trained in India where the emphasis is still on the exam (and also in Pakistan). The teachers especially at the bed side make sure your observation remains better than Sherlock Holms.
When a patient walks in you must have some idea of the problem he/she is going to present and half the diagnosis should be ready before the patient opens the mouth. Because you have seen his/her gait, the face, other movements, how he/she is dressed, etc. etc. a host of things to observe.  Clinical acumen is sharpened by frequent questioning of students by the teacher as this physician (Professor) is doing.
As a neurology resident, my teacher told me you should be able to make a diagnosis of sphenoid ridge meningioma from looking at the skull films of the patient.. and you are not supposed to miss; at the appropriate place on the inner table of the skull there will be vascular marking of the blood vessel feeding that tumor. (That was before the CT and MRI days and before doing cerebral angiogram. That was some teaching. I have many stories like that

Late Sunday Surkhi--Talaq

Well, folks today being the famous  11th day of the 10th month you will forgive me for being lazy and to tell you the truth I was very busy on this sunday which fell on the special date of 10.10.10
One new couple was celebrating their wedding and then we had another important engagement.
Anyway so here I am and I thought I may write a bit more on this subject of Talaq.
Talaq or divorec often brings to your mind fighting bickering between the spouses and families etc, including court procedures which bring substance to the lawyers like, some lawyer said to his wife,
"honey wait till I get this couple finish their divorce and then I'll get you that pearl necklace"  (or something like that.)
The teachings of Qur'an tell us,
"When ye divorce women and they fulfill the term of their Iddah either take them back on equitable terms or set them free on equitable terms..................." (#231 of S. Baqara)
This "equitable terms" is very significant.
The other verse (#229) "Divorce is only permissible twice (goes on to say) after that the parties should either hold together on equitable terms or separate with kindness,.........."
The word in Arabic is "m'aroof" which is translated as "equitable terms" by Yusuf Ali and Asad renders it "in a fair manner"
This is the important aspect I wish to single out here because there is so much ill-feeling and inclination to hurt the other party which is why Qur'an emphasizes "fair manner". In more clear words, do not fight or hurt but separate with kindness,
MEN ARE ADVISED NOT TO TAKE BACK THEIR GIFTS OR OTHER THINGS WHICH HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO HER
Once parting has been decided by both plan the separation on good terms. men should not only let the women keep what is their share and their gifts but should give them additional "parting gift", that is what I understand by the word IHSAN "kindness", does not completely convey the total significance of Ihsan.
 Verses #236 1nd 237 indicate'

"there is no blame on you, if you divorce women before consummation or fixation of their dower, but bestow on them (a suitable gift); a wealthy according to his means and the poor according to his means;--a gift of a reasonable amount is due from those who do the right things"
"And if ye divorce before summation but after the fixation of dower, then half of the dower (is due to the women), unless they remit it, or (the man's half) is remitted by him in whose hands is the marriage tie and the remission (of man's half) is the nearest to righteousness- and do not forget liberality between yourselves,  (that is the men and the women involved in this process), for Allah sees well all that ye do"

I have done my own Italics to indicate that aspect Allah is insisting upon the two parties how to be fair  .
These are the aspects of divorce that we are less likely to pay attention to and I think they are very very important for "doing the thing in a right way" both the men and women divorcing each other are warned "to be fair with each other". The word is "fadla bainakum" which Asad renders it as "And forget not that you are to act with grace towards each other".
I have seen too many divorces in my life and seen the effects and after effects etc. of divorces and that is my reason for emphasis on this aspect although I know very well how difficult it is for the two parties to follow the Qur'anic instructions. I have seen even those who have good knowledge of sharia and Qur'an and they ignore these teachings with no remorse. The families suffer the children of the divorcing couple suffer and....
well you know all these unpleasant things I dont have count.

Teen Talaq--Contd.

So we have two positions (with Talaq Mughalliza- I will not repeat this is the one I am talking about).
 1. Accepted and adhered to by non-Ahl-Hadeeth (I always have difficulty in defining these labels because we are all following hadeeth- NOT the Imams named like Malik, Abu Haneefa etc.)
Here 3 talaqs pronounced in one sitting will be taken as three--final requiring HALALA to return to divorced wife (again) and so it will be Ghair Ruja'i type +
 2. Accepted by Ghair Muqallid group (Non-followers of any Mazdhab) three given in one sitting will be counted as one. The only three talaqs will be those THAT ARE REPEATED AT INTERVALS OF PERIODS. (This later type is undisputed final three talaq situation and is not being discussed.
Without quoting hadeeth (Of Abdullah Bin Umar RA) let me summarize the way a Muslim should divorce ("good" Talaq or طلاق  حسن   )
The wife has finished her period and is Pak or Tuhur period again, pronounce Talaq one time making sure you have NOT gone to bed with her because if you have. you must wait for the next period of Tuhur  طہر to pronounce. Let the woman finish her second period-- and again pronounce one more time and again no going to bed and then finish her third period  (without going to bed with her because If you have sexual intercourse with her that is counted as Rujooa which means you have dropped the idea of divorce)  The divorce is complete and unapplicable but once all three periods have finished and then you pronounce third time that will be THREE TALAQS (Ghair Ruja'ee)
Like our Imam said, if one bullet will kill why use the second or third.  That is to say the Talaq is completed after third period if you have pronounced only one time The resulting talaq of such type will be you have to marry again if you want to go back to the same wife. I know some would suggest pronounce second also but that is not essential because Allah mentioned in the above quoted aya only a suggestion that you are allowed the Ruja'i type talaq up to two times only and if you take the liberty of going for the third; beware! you will not be allowed to get back to her fourth time (without halala).
Now taking these both positions we can see there is room for repenting and reconsidering if the three pronunciations were made for whatever reason and time is given to you so that is "leniency" in the Position of #2 given above whereas the man has no time for repenting etc. in position of #1. He lost the opportunity with that wife unless he can wait for her to be married to somebody else and enjoyed Husband-wife relations, may have more time lapsed and then if either her husband dies or he does divorce her on his own-- then and only then he will be able to remarry her.
This means that whoever is divorcing his wife in anger and without the knowledge of consequences of three talaqs  he is creating hell for himself in more than one way. So he should not take divorce as a simple matter of just pronouncing three talaqs and you are done. He should think carefully before saying three times.
There is one 'leniency' here that if one used words like three talaqs in one sitting, there may be possibility of considering that as one IF the intention of the person is that of one. But if the words used are talaq to you talaq to you talaq to you, even in anger etc. that would be counted as three no matter what the intention.
AS I see there is merit in both situations but I belong personally to Muqallideen group (Mostly teachings of Imam Abu Haneefa) and in this matter I do not feel I have option available to use Ghair Muqallideen advice. This is NOT a matter of merely an "opinion", because of "ijma'a" of Sahaba on that. I have put forward two positions as objectively as possible.
I will now take questions insha-Allah for discussion but will guide you to the best of my ability to seek proper guidance from sources I can suggest; Remember I am NOT  an Islamic scholar.
Now I wish to say afew words about Halala but will do that in a separate blog

Sunday Surkhi- Teen Talaq Contd.

Before discussion let me first give names and significance of various types of Talaq
1. Talaq Ruja'i    طلاق رجعی
This is divorce pronounced in which during Iddat one husband can re-establish the matrimonial bond without new nikah AND after Iddat can re-establish the bond with a new Nikah.
2. Talaq Ghair Ruja'i    طلاق غیر رجعی
This is a divorce pronounced after which the husband hs no option available to rejoin his wife during Iddat (the three periods time)
This is called Talaq Baa-in  طلاق بائن
The other talaq which can be called Ghair ruja'i is the third talaq or when (acceptable) three talaqs are pronounced in one sitting which is called Talaq Mughalliza طلاق مغلّظہ which would be absolute Talaq and the husband cannot get back to his wife without halala., So both the three talaqs pronounced at three different times as well ass pronounced all three at one time can be called Ghair Ruja'i, though in fact these are more than ghair ruja'i.
Now back to the question of three talaqs pronounced at one time

The story is given like this.
From the time of the prophet to the first two years time of Umar RA (As Khalifa)
the three Talaqs (Mughalliza, given in one sitting) were considered one talaq. (This is a sweeping statement because there is no doubt that some times the three talaqs were accepted as three-irrevocable and ghair ruja'i). Anyway Umar RA felt that people are getting away with three talaqs as one whenever anybody wants to and they have become hasty and careless so why not take ALL Talaq Mughalliza as three talaqs and stop counting them as ONE.
He proposed that to the Sahaba and ALL AGREED and so he went ahead and made the decision of counting Talaq Mughalliza as three talaqs (which would require a halala to get back his wife).
This then became an "IJMA'A" and therefore binding for the rest of the Muslims to follow.
All four sections Mazdaheb Imams agree with that and nobody questions.
However those who do not follow ANY IMAM and call themselves Ahl-e-Hadeeth or Ghair Muqallid
غیر مقلّدThey say that this interpretation was done by Umar and they do not follow him or any imam so they go back to the prophet's decision which makes it easy for the persons to declare three talaqs and still have the option for Rujooa رجوعavailable to them.
So let me take up this question and cite examples of the prophet SAWS
One hadeeth is that of 'Rukanah'(Briefly)
Rukana Bin Yazeed RA narrates that he divorced his wife Suhaima with Tallaqa al-Battata  --طلقہ البتّتہ
and then told the prophet who asked him to swear upon Allah that he actually meant only one talaq and he said yes by God I meant only one and that was treated as Baa-in and the prophet gave him permission to re marry without Halala.
In those days this "al-Battata" was used in place of three talaqs or talaq Baa-in and therefore the prophet allowed it as Baain, after making sure the person did not mean three talaqs.
Next is hadeeth of Uwaimer  Al-Ajlani عویمر العجلانی رضی اللہ عنہ
Briefly; This man made "Liaan"  -لعان-with his wife and before the prophet told him anything he pronounced three talaqs to his wife in the presence of the prophet and he accepted it as final irrevocable talaq .
Another hadeeth (from Saheeh Bokhari quoted in Maarif-ul-Qur'an page 563 Ist vol.) Ayesha RA reports that "A man pronounced three talaqs to one woman who then afterwards married another man who also divorced her. Now would her previous husband make the matrimonial bond with her again?
The prophet said NO, not unless it is made sure that the second husband has been in bed with her.
I have given these examples for you to make your judgment. One more hadeeth I quote from Nawawi's forty hadeeth (this is #28)
From Ibn Sariya RA "...........We said O messanger of Allah it is as though this is farewell sermon so counsel us, he said; I counsel you to fear Allah and to give absolute obedience even if a slave becomes your leader. Verily he among you who lives long, will see great controversy, so you keep to my sunnah and to the sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafa clinging to them stubbornly............."
That is the reason why when Umar RA makes a decision AND ALL AGREE with him it is considered as good as Sunnah of the prophet. After all-- and mark this point-- He was not making his "own" decision (some have sort of accused him)but a decision based on the precedence of the prophet's decisions and the well-known companions were still there who had known such decisions of the prophet SAWS and that is why that was NOT considered something new being introduced by Umar RA
Now I am ready to make my final discussion on this subject .

Jum'ah Journal--Three Talaq

Ibn Umar RA narrated:
Rasool-ul-Allah SAWS said,
"Among the halal things the most despised by God is divorce" Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah, considered it saheeh.
I have hesitated writing about this for a long time and on the other hand I have wanted to write about it for a long time. Yes, I come across this subject every now and again and always I find that we are always making mistakes because of lack of knowledge about this subject.
Generally speaking, the notion exists that a Muslim man should say three talaqs when divorcing his wife and this is utterly wrong.
From Mahmood Ibn Labeed RA, who said:Rasool-ul-Allah was informed that someone divorced his wife saying three times Talaq in one sitting. He got furious and stood up to say--Are people playing with the Book of Allah while I am still alive amongst you?--On that one man stood up and said--Shall I not kill him Ya Rasool-ul-Allah ?
Well I will be writing more about this before I write the Hadeeth that advises the proper way of divorcing (one time and three times)
From the above hadeeth of Ibn Labeed, it looks like that it is haram (prohibited) to say three times divorce in one sitting. However here it does not indictae whether this was considered ONE talaq or was considered three talaq about which the Qur'an Says

"A divorce is permissible only twice; after that the parties should either hold together on equitable terms or separate with kindness; It is not lawful for you (men) to take back any of your gifts (from your wives) except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah..........." (Aya 229
"So, if a husband divorces his wife (Irrevocably; that is third time),He cannot after that remarry her until after she married another husband and he divorced her.   .........." (Aya 230--of sura Baqara)

This is the "three talaq" which is allowed by Allah (though not liked) that is one and remarry her, then second and remarry her and THEN the third time pronouncing the final or irrevocable talaq after which you cannot remarry her
So pronouncing three talaqs in one sitting is disapproved but ACCEPTED as the final irrevocable talaq which makes a husband and wife to get married for the fourth time ONLY IF that wife has been married and divorced by ANOTHER HUSBAND. (Or if he dies) This is called "halala"  ( I am writing about Halala more later) and is very much despised, not allowed if that is "arranged" by the man for his 4th time
This particular question was admirably dealt with in the old Indian Movie called "Nikah"
There are two positions about the three talaqs pronounced in one sitting, one of which is accepted as correct the other as not correct according to ( my thinking) ALL FOUR IMAMS as well as many well-known Sahaba and their followers and the followers of the followers.
Those who call themselves "ahl-hadeeth" or call themselves Ghair muqallad" (Not following ANY IMAM) consider it wrong to accept the three talaqs as final irrevocable talaq necessitating a halala but are of the opinion that such 'three talaqs" pronounced in one sitting equal to only one talaq.(I guess that is the reason for that erroneous notion among Muslims)
. Let me first state the position of all four Imams which is based on sunnah and Ijama'a. How that Ijam'a came into being requires another note so will write next time insha-Allah. I am hoping that so far what has been written is clearly understandable but would answer any questions

Sunday Surkhi--AntiMuslim feelings

There is no doubt that such names as "ground Zero Mosque" are created with Muslim hatred. I was really appalled at the Ad. used by Renee Ellmers for her election  campaign using openly anti-Islam and Muslim hatred wording. Perhaps encouraged from the NY successful campaigner who won "because"? of his stand on anti-Mosque statements.
It reminded me of the Republican attempts (Not successful) at a similar campaign against Obama during presidential elections when in strategic states a specific DVD was distributed free including NC and of course you all NC people would remember our protest with News and Observer people.
The fact remains however that the atmosphere of USA is tainted with this "anti-Muslim" color or Islamo-phobia what ever you may call it and all those people who harbor such sentiments either because of 9/11 or any other reasons are coming out in the open and "enjoying" the Free Speech these days and I feel it is going to last for some time.
We as Muslims, however, should continue our efforts may be with more vigour to educate all peoples about real Islam.

An Avowed Atheist awarded for---

How does an atheist get high honors by degrading religious personality?
 Answer:
Do something against Islam/Qur'an/Muhammad in the name of
Freedom of speech
The most religiously guarded maxim of the West
But if that happens to be any other religion than Islam the freedom is short-circuited.
No you cant do that It hurts the feelings of so and so. That is not allowed, the first amendment (USA) does not apply.

Thats Me, Come back

Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim readers
It was a good experience hidden away in the Masjid for 10 days, trying to make contact or trying to keep in touch with my Creator. I realized it is hard to change bad habits but evaluated myself and found lot of negatives.
Will continue working on it

Sunday Surkhi- Today's word

 My dear Readers
I am taking your leave from today for the next couple of weeks or so.
My 're-treat' time. Yes I am planning to re treat myself for freshening up my life. This last 10 days of Ramadhan provides an excellent opportunity for everyone but since I did not 're-tyre' myself (or the vehicle of of my life) when I retired over seven years ago (my my! am I getting to be old and---) now I have to do this bit.
My "SELF" which is me, my body + soul+ my personality weaved into these, needs to be looked at by ME but with the vision of a sane, a 'saint' and see what can be done to it for "improvement". Well everything we have needs cleaning, does it not?
See you in sha-Allah (God-willing) in two weeks.

Jum'ah Journal-

Ali RA said: (to some one who asked for counel
"Do not be one of those who hope for the hereafter without work and postpone repentance by exaggeration f hope......"
In this second Ashrah of Ramadan two more quotes from him:
"Beckon fortune by means of CHARITY"
"I marvel at one who despairs while still able to seek forgiveness.
The prophet SAWS designated this second Ashrah for "forgiveness"
 and Allah's forgiveness is VAST.

Changing my Opinion

Last Saturday in my blog I expressed uneasiness for building the "ground Zero Mosque" which is a clear misnomer and this term has been cleverly and purposefully fabricated and should be criticized.
I am posting a part of a copy of an article I recieved that needs your attention and the reason why I am back in favor of that Islamic center in Manhatten.
No compromise on religious freedom

By Richard Cohen
Tuesday, August 24, 2010; A15
When it comes to the mosque that's neither too close to Ground Zero for its proponents nor far enough away for its opponents, the disturbing word "compromise" is now being tossed around. It has been suggested by New York Gov. David Paterson, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and, in Sunday's Post, Karen Hughes, once an important adviser to George W. Bush. These are all well-meaning people, but they do not understand that in this case, the difference between compromise and defeat is nonexistent.
This is not a complicated matter. If you believe that an entire religion of upward of a billion followers attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, then it is understandable that locating a mosque near the fallen World Trade Center might be upsetting. But the facts are otherwise. Islam was not in on the attack -- just a sliver of believers. That being the case, those people with legitimate hurt feelings are mistaken. They need our understanding, not our indulgence.
If, on the other hand, you do not believe that the attack was launched by an entire religion, you have a moral duty to support the creation of the Islamic center. Lots of people fall into this category -- or say they do -- and still protest the mosque. They include Newt Gingrich, New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio and that Twittering Twit of the Tundra, Sarah Palin. They indulge in a kind of pornography of analogy -- a bit of demagogic buffoonery that is becoming more and more obvious. They pretend that they have a solemn obligation to defend the (powerful) majority from the demands of the (powerless) minority and champion people whose emotions are based on a misreading of the facts.
Those of us who are of a certain age remember the days when African Americans and their champions were being cautioned to go slow, compromise. They were being told to consider the tender feelings of whites, no matter how ugly their racism, and protect their dewy Scarlett O'Hara way of life. Leading politicians espoused this course, President Eisenhower among them. Wrong was somehow to become a little less so, but right would be painfully postponed. What was compromise? The middle of the bus?

Sunday Surkhi-Sialkot Killing

It appears I keep getting bad news from Pakistan.
This one is un-imaginable, brutal killing of two youngmen 15 and 17. Crime== They were carrying a bag (Sports, they wanted to play Cricket) in an area where there had been some robbery so they were considered suspects.
No investigation, somebody accused them and attacked them and a mob of people came out to beat them up, nobody trying to find out why. They died and their bodies are hanged upside down at a crossing. This is the city that boasts of high education and the city of Allama Mohammad Iqbal.
I do not know what has happened to people, what is going on and why can these things happen while the police officers are looking on almost supervising. The Suppreme court has ordered to take strict action against the police officers who did nothing etc. etc.
But to me what is strange is that this kind of thing happened. One of the boys was a Hafiz of Qur'an, but even if he was not, how could a mob of normal human beings kill two youngmen. I thought Lynching was only practiced in America against the slaves and negroes.
As I said before man has reached the lowest of low in Pakistan.
I believe that the floods are Pakistan's second wake up call, the first was the earthquake of 2005.
Like some other columnist I wonder what kind of wake-up call awaits Pakistan in 2115 (may Allah forbid)

Sunday Surkhi-More floods, more deaths

There is no doubt that all the superlatives are being used to describe this disaster in Pakistan.
What I fail to understand that people in Karachi still find it necessary to "avenge" their "leader's" death and go on a spree  burning vehicles and killing innocent people.and terrorize the city as it seems to have become a past time for these murderers.
I know the news is old but I just saw some pictures of floods as well as the results of these murderers.
 Are they Muslim?

Yawm Azadi Pakistan

Do not know what to write and how to say on this day the 63rd birthday of  Pakistan. Having seen those heart-rending pictures and videos of the poor people of Pakistan. 6 million displaced and number of deaths keeps increasing and likely to do so for some coming time.
Yet the bullets and bombs continue. I have said these are just happenings but how else are the "azdab" of God has affected people?

Jum'ah Journal--Hot weather Ramzan

Summer getting more hot days, reminds me of my younger dyas fasting July-August fasts without AC and no refrigerator  temp. over 110 F, we would welcome any clouds any time and rains would be so much relief but this years rains have  over done it., reminding us that God is Qadeer on all things and he has everything in appropriate proportion, a slight increase in that proportion cretaes heavoc (Floods of today in Pakistan are a terse reminder) کلّ شی ء عندہ بمقدار from S, #13, Verse 8. (Everything with Him has a proportion")
This "miqdar"  can be a good news when it satisfies the parched earth and  dampening of the heat of sun even if temporary. But if God llets this 'miqdar to increase the opposite happens.
Anyway I was talking about mild cooling effect of rain was so welcome for the young (myself) fasting and going for Taraweeh. It was hard and so when I see this hot weather of Ramzan I thank God that now I have everything to keep me safe from the  heat and sweat. I was in the village with no electricity, so I had to find the help of "hand fan". Would go to spend time between Zuhr and Asr near a well with water running and sit down under the shade of a tree watching the oxen pair going round and round running the water extracting system and cool clear water flowing into the fields
That was  'fast' of hot weather (49-50).

Ramadhan Mubarak to all Muslims

Yes, today is the first of this holy month, the blessed month, the month of Muslim celebration especially in America and more so in New York.
I know the media hype, the varied opinions of all sometimes confusing, some times annoying but the fact is Muslims are now a recognized Minority in the USA including 'Official' recognition (by the US government), no less than the recognition of Christmas or Hanuka or other religion's'celebrarions'.
 Why NY?
There are reportedly no less than 800K Muslims in NY and there is a claim of 100 mosques/Islamic centers in NY. The fuss is about hurting the feelings of people affected by 0/11 by building another mosque which happens to be a couple blocks from Ground Zero.
What? hurting the feelings of Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus etc. by building a mosque near Ground Zero.
The question is were the perpetrators of 9/11 really Muslims? May be by name but ask a real scholar of Islam. He will give you quotes of Qur'an and Hadeeth that Muslims are prohibited from killing any person who is not fighting and clearly all the Muslims, Christians, Jews and Hindus in the twin towers, were NOT fighting,
Well, it is kind of getting too repetitive and old to talk about it. Even if they were Muslims what does that mean if the other American Muslims wish to build a mosque  at that location. How far from the GZ will not hurt the feelings of all those Muslim, Jewish Christian and such families?  TV personalities come up with remarkable hatred of Muslims and Islam.
I heard a Journalist discussing about the Mosque near ground zero and persistently questioning an "imam"
"Do you support Hamas?" That is a party that won the elections and is a legitimate party of Palestine even though US Government  (and Israel etc) have declared it to be "Terrorist Organization".
To me it is ridiculous to connect Israeli-Palestinian connection when discussing about building a mosque in NY or anywhere.
What should then happen to the other 100 or so mosques in NY and thousands of others all over USA. We here in Raleigh are building mosques. Should we stop then?
The above is just one side of the argument. In my own opinion  USA has consistently shown less prejudicial attitude than by any other country in the world. Just see how the Mayor of NY spoke out which is so supportive of my opinion and then  I remember (Journalist) Brown's statement (in support of his presidency) on TV when talking about Obama and his winning campaign before elections. "Even if he is a Muslim, so what? he is the best candidate to be President of this country" (or something like that).
Yes I agree there are still people who do not consider Obama to be legitimate president inspite of his solid  Christian backgound with regular church history and seeing his birth certificate in Hawaii, but that is just ignorance of people.
The people talking against building a mosque in NY are not necessarily ignorant and persons like Foxman, the head of ADL has been duely criticised for the opposing statement to be nothing but bigotry.

Sunday Surkhi-Murder of Aid workers in Afghanistan

Whoever is responsible for their death deserves all contempt and condemnation from all Muslims.
How could anybody even think of such a heinous act. It does not matter whether they were Muslims or Non-Muslim. Killing them is simply inhuman and prohibited in Islam
Everybody is telling things like that and my statement is no exception, but what bothers me is how does such a thing happen in Islamic world? Why are Muslims so ignorant and when are they going to learn the teachings of Islam/ Who is going to teach? Surely they are not expecting Rasoolullah SAWS to come back to teach, he has left his legacy of teachings on everything.
I am angry and sad indeed.

Parent Trap--Lindsay Lohan

I had seen the original 1961 movie  (Parent Trap) also when I saw Lindsay's twin-sisters playing in the 1998 remake and no doubt  She stands out clearly a winner. The film is a light-hearted comedy
1961 film had used Brian Keith (One of my Fav. actors) and Maureen O'Hara as parents and the girl playing the twins (cannot remember the name) did a lot to amuse me. Lindsay has turned out to be beautiful girl and much spoiled with drugs and now has been placed in Jail (rightly so by the Judge) That may improve her so she can get back her career, otherwise, she would be doomed as an actress or singer.  That jailing may be a blessing in disguise if she can turn her life 180 degrees. Somebody should tell her. (This at the time of current writing)
Drugs, so often determine the fate of these artists.
Anyway, Lindsay film has these twins meeting at the camp and what connects me with this more is their birthday
 Yes folks
 That is my birthday too.

April 2021 I just watched her being interviewed by British journalist. Reason Is Lindsay on the point of turning Muslim?
They sounded scared but Her responses were reassuring. I had noted on some previous interview that she had quit drugs, was not pursuing a singing career and has become rich with business options. Today I was impressed with her intelligence and her love for studying Quran in addition to other religious books but she said Quran gives her strange satisfaction and spiritual uplift. Her sister is Buddhist
She is on the right track after all but becoming a Muslim depends on Allah SWT

Jum'ah Journal--Secularism

The bignews at present is the floods and having talked to our people in Pakistan the torrential rains have never been so ugly and the floods have continued to rise. The distances between rivers have decreased to almost completely disappearing. May Allah have mercy, please pray for the country but here is my take on secularism (Borowed from a book)
If Pakistan really becomes completely secular, almost like Turkey (Like Musharraf was thinking to change) some youngman has given a detail what would happen (Abidullah Jan)
1. All Loudspeakers for Azan will be removed (Actually I would support that to some extent because the Jum'ah Khutbahs also go on the loud speakers which broadcast them to the whole mohallah and not just the namazis or masjid area)
 2. Entire Educational material will change so that no references to Allah or Islam will remain
3. All those who pray in public places or go for Hajj will be declared fundamentalists and barred from Army service or other Governmental offices.
4. Women will be forced to remove hijabs/burqa if they go for a job or work
5. All Islamic/Muslim schools/colleges or Madrisas will be closed down
6.  All political parties using Islam in their agenda will be banned
7. All public symbols of Islamic type will be  banned
8. Constitution will be changed to reflect people's sovereignty instead of that of Allah and all shariah laws will be changed. Also meaning that divorce and amrriage laws will not be Islamic
Divine Moral authority will be replaced by the moral authority of Human Reason.
These rules, of course will be applicable in any Muslim country that supports secularism and abhors Islamic or religious superiority. May Allah guide our leaders in Pakistan to see the light and also the leaders in Turkey or other Muslim countries

Sunday Surkhi- Tragedy after tragedy

The floods affecting north west Pakistan, somewhat unusual. It is just human tragedy after tragedy. Poor people usually suffer more. How many homes are lost, how many lives are lost and how many things are lost. We will not know but those who we find in need of help MUST be helped.
I overheard some discussions of the type that
"This is happening because of wrong doings of some type of Muslims and is a result of that allah sending azab, jst like that was the thinking with the deadly earthquake of Pakistan in the north.
Well maybe it is true but does that mean we watch people drown in floods children and women, with and without burqas or hijabs and men, with or without beards. Is that what we are taught in Islam? Should we not look at our own selves first before being critical of others?
NO my gentle readers, we only see sufferings of humans and jump to help in anyway we can.
