It is quite a story how he was admitted but he really did not have much choice to get proper treatment otherwise.
I remember him receiving a wire from Zabisko(?Spelling= Zbysko) who was the world champion before him, about his health. That was very good of that Russian champion who was still alive. There were many visitors for him but one I remember, a journalist from Australia who wanted to ask him personally how he defeated Zbysko in 1910 (return fight) in one and a half seconds. Gama told him (through the interpreters), no it was not seconds (rumors) but minutes. The first fight was in London when that Russian heavy weight handed over the championship to Gama completely tired after 3 hours of grueling wrestling (the importance of stamina) but Wicji just call it draw which may be true
I remember his brother (Imam Bakhsh) came in almost daily walking with the staff in his hand to see him and show his respect. Bholu on the other hand who was his son-in-law (was the Rustam-Pakistan) and visited him only once or twice along with his other brothers, accompanied by newspaper men etc. But he never had as handsome a body as Gama who never weighed more than 210 pounds. Gama was of average height (About 5 ft 7 or 8 inch)but a strong muscular build. I used to feel the remarkable grip of his hand every evening as he would shake hands with me. That grip used to be the most powerful grip in the world.
His 'maalishia' (messager) used to tell us many stories of his unforgettable and legendary feats of performance of the past. His job was to see that the pehalwan's body remains in good shape all the time. Minor sprains and sometimes dislocations etc. were all treated by this "messager" who was supposed to be adept at such orthopedic and physical therapy procedures. Malishias considered themselves like 'married' to the wrestler. He was still looking after this 'body' in the hospital. Because of dietary restrictions he was not allowed to eat rice often but when he was given on occasion the "pullao" I could see the relish in his face.
He was a thorough gentleman with an easygoing unassuming demeanor that would win immediate liking form a stranger. He was usually quiet and uncomplaining undemanding type of patient. Once his photograph appeared in the then popular Urdu weekly (Lail-o-nahar) with me (my back to the camera) but I dont have it now with me.!!! I should have gotten a copy of that weekly journal
After discharge from the hospital he lived for about a couple of years more. Inna lillahi-wa-inna ilaihi raajioon.
Also see his photo in my blog of 2016
