It has been a month I did not visit here, was not feeling up to it.
"I am not finished needing them (parents)"
A film dialogue but caught my attention. The situation was two sisters (both grown up and married) talking about living, looking after elderly parents with Alzheimer's affecting one. One sister who was visiting (Thanksgiving) parental home where the second sis was living (in the parental home) and you can imagine the type of discussion going on between the two when one of them ends up saying this classical sentence. Actually, nearly all elderly people go through such experiences with their grown-up, settled children and number of grandchildren. They are too busy in their jobs etc. to visit or look after their parents and grandchildren are going to school and cannot make it and so this is a common occurrence. However, some children do care for older parents and plan their activities etc with such programs that include parents and that was this daughter who uttered these words that went straight to my heart
Of course we have Quran advising us about how to take care of elderly parents, Sura 17, (Al-Israa) ayaat 23 and 24:
" Thy Lord has decreed that ye worship none but HIM, and that you be kind to the Parents; whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them Ufff (word of contempt), nor repel them but address them in terms of honor." " And out of kindness lower to them the wing of humility and say My Lord! bestow on them Your Mercy even as they cherished me in my childhood".
