A well known phrase carrying that condescending attitude applicable in real life in so many situations but I have been attracted to this by a movie I have watched Philomina.
Partly I started watching due to the character played by one of my old favorite actresses, Judy Dench who I enjoyed in her role of M in 007 movies or in the drama of Pride and Prejudice as Aunt of Darcy. The story of Philomina however is dealt with very ably likely to have a lasting impression on the audience (including me)
The main thing I see is that the sinner (unwed mother) is hated by the Nuns in the church examplified by the outburst of the actual Nun who hated such mothers and justified all her hatred in doing lot of wrong more sinful things than the unwed mothers not only against the teachings of Jesus Christ himself but also against human rights sort of saying I am ' holier than thou' because I 'denied sex all my life for myself therefore I am closer to God' (O Really?).
In real life however even I have been guilty of doing the same thing may be unintentionally but probably we all do it sometimes in our own way under some situation some time or the other
In the end Philomina tells the Nun "I forgive you" but the Nun says nothing sitting smugly in her wheelchair. 'The sinner' gains more respect from me than the Nun her claim of not having had sex all her life sounds more like jealousy with others who have not denied such carnal pleasure.
