No no this is not about that woman prime minister. (Actually it may be that her forefathers had that special profession, just like in India some people have such names as Bandooqwala or Chai-wala etc.)
I am talking about the real life person who by profession was a thatcher.
Yes it is a somewhat forgotten profession. The English tend to preserve everything in their culture.
It was about 1964 or thereabout I was working as a physician in the Isle of Wight, an island on the southern coast of England just near the well-known southern coastal city "Southampton" The most well-known thing of Isle of Wight is that the "hovercraft" was invented in Cowes, name of coastal town (Yes I lived for a year in that town).
Incidentally the names of some towns were associated with some statements I remember only some, like:
"Cowes" but you cant milk them
"Ryde" but no vehicle (or something like that)
" Needles" but you cant thread them
"Freshwater" but you cant drink it
Something like that.
You must have seen some old british houses that have a roof called "thatched roof" If you have ever gone to Shakespeare's house or see an old hose in some village you will see that Thatched roof. Anyway one day a patient was admitted in our ward with some illness (I cant recall what it was) and he was an actual Thatcher by profession so I was told he is a kind of rarity in England these days (end of the story)
