true?
True, BUT what has been condemned is the ungodly things written by them, like sex, wine etc..
Briefly, the chapter (#26) titled 'Shuara' in Qurán was in defence of the prophet (S) that he is not a poet because Qurán is not poetry as it tells things diametrically opposite to what poets do, like good instruction, how to worship and recognize God in your life etc. They are also prone to exagerate beyond limits and then they do not practice what they say.
THAT IS WHY the prophet did support and appreciate poets like Ghassan Bin Thabit (RA), for he was very disturbed and consulted the prophet (S) when this sura was revealed. The prophet (S) told him it is not against all poets but those who write "bad" things.
Interestingly, Dr. Israr Ahmed has made good comments on that subject when he talks about Allama Iqbal and his poetry (I have a video of his lecture) Ghassan Bin Thabit is the first Náat writer of the prophet PBUH (and approved by him)
