The leader of the "American Muslim Mission" dies on 9th and the Muslims will definitely miss him. Inna lillah-i-wa Inna ilaihi Rajeoon.
May his soul rest in peace.
I had some criticisms (minor ones) about him but no doubt he was a good and considerate knowledgeable leader for the African American community especially who would embrace Islam.
Sure he was not as exciting a speaker as Luis Farakhan or Malik Shabazz but he was (single-handedly) instrumental in guiding a large number of "black Muslims"(Fifteen thousand followers of Alijah) to the right path. May Allah accept this gtreat accomplishment from him.
That is not a small thing brothers and sisters. He was recognised all over the world as a leader of Muslims of America and was indeed a spokes person for Islam in the "West". He called the group as "Nation of Islam in the West" (before taking A.M.M. title). Initially the African Amedrican Muslims considered themselves as a "separate Church" but he advised them step by step to become "universal Muslims" (part of the Muslim Ummah).
These Muslims have come a long way from the times of his father Alijah. Warith definitely showe great courage to 'separate' from his father's teachings and had to face his fahter's displeasure including monetary loss but he never wavered from his convictions of true Islam, the one that was realised by Malcom X also.
I feel that African American Muslims would be more free to join the rest of the Muslim Ummah, thanks to the continued teachings of their leader Imam Warith-ud-Din Muhammad.
The American media did not make big news of his death but they are too busy right now in the "Lipstick on the pig" controversy or politics. I cant blame them. This year has been the most exciting political year for the media and an historical one indeed. America is writing a new chapter in its history. How the result of elections will unfold the political landscape of America is something to watch.
Saugoree means I was born or I hail from Saugor This is the way they spelt the name of that city of my birth during British days of India. Then I moved at 11 years of age to Kotla a village in the Panjab close to the Kashmir border where I finished my initial education and childhood going on to Lahore for further studies where I got BSc and MBBS and then left for NWFP where I spent 2 1/2 years, teaching in the new Medical School, and from there leaving for UK and then USA

I also heard lot about Nation of Islam and in mid ninties they were very active and if im not wrong they also arranged Million March in USA as well. No doubt it is necesssary to bring Afro-American muslims to bring them in fabric of Islam and motivate them that they r also same.
Regards,
Ayaz
Let me clear the confusion here.
What is (still) called "Nation of Islam" is primarily a socially oriented movement startd by Alijah Muhammad. The African American community has been "hungry" for good leaders for their social and economic uplift so they swarmed around the call of Alijah who was a gifted speaker. His own ideas of Islam and Muslims were 'twisted' and did not represent Islam but one thing he did good, he let his children learn Qur'an and Hadeeth and that is what Warith D Muhammad, his son accepted and realised that his father's teachings were NOT Islam.
He "rebelled" and separated from his fahter and thousands of "Black Muslims" as they were called by the US Media, followed him and came nto the fold of real Islam. Subsequently many more followed and still continue to break off from NOI to become "Mainstream Muslims"
Thus Warith had to give another name to his group "AMM" (Am. Muslim Mission) though he changed such titles
Farrakhan who occupied the Position of leadership of NOI(after the death of Alijah Muhammad) was the one who called for 'Million Man March'. It was "NOI" project. Others joined in not because they followed Alijah's philosophy or Farrakhan's but just because it was a good idea and probably a good cause.
